Showing Up As Yourself: Be the Leader Only You Can Be

Written by Perry Maughmer | Dec 11, 2024 5:40:28 PM

In today's episode of the Potential Leader Lab Podcast, we explore the fundamental principles of authentic leadership, inspired by Rabbi Sharon Brous's practice in her temple. Here, individuals have the option to walk to the right to offer comfort or to the left to receive it. This powerful metaphor illustrates the essence of leadership: being present with others in their struggles without always trying to solve their problems.

I emphasize that real leadership development is more about self-discovery and expressing oneself than achieving external goals or competencies. The journey to becoming a transformational leader involves continuous experimentation, reflection, and adaptation, engaging deeply with one's experiences to foster both personal and professional growth.

For me, effective leadership isn't measured by personal accomplishments but by the growth and achievements of others. It's about being genuinely present, creating an environment of empathy and trust.  Ultimately, I believe that leadership is a moment-to-moment choice that transcends titles and positions, aiming to create a better world for those we care about.

This episode also references inspirational figures such as Thomas Edison, Seth Godin, and Winston Churchill, underscoring the necessity of learning from failure and the importance of persistence.

Top Takeaways from this Week's Leadership Podcast

  • The Comfort and Support Path: Inspired by Rabbi Sharon Braus's temple practice, I discuss the impactful metaphor of choosing to either comfort others or seek comfort. This metaphor underlines the fundamental essence of leadership: the importance of being present with others during their struggles without the need to solve their issues.

  • Self-Discovery Over Competencies: I emphasize that true leadership development transcends external achievements or skills; it's fundamentally about self-discovery and expressing oneself. Understanding and aligning with one's core beliefs and values is crucial.

  • Reflection and Introspection: I highlight how growth and effectiveness in leadership stem from regular reflection. I suggest using daily prompts like "What value surfaced today?" and "How did I feel in alignment with my true self today?" These help enhance self-awareness and encourage experimenting with new approaches.

  • The Jazz of Leadership: Using jazz as an analogy, I illustrate the importance of live experimentation and adaptability in leadership. Like jazz, effective leadership requires improvisation, real-time action, and the bravery to experiment despite potential failures.

  • Philosophy and Leadership: I introduce philosophical concepts like existentialism, ontology, and phenomenology to broaden your thinking and challenge existing assumptions. Leadership is portrayed as a journey of self-discovery and meaningful interaction rather than just theoretical knowledge.

  • Explore, Experiment, Evolve: Leadership is an ongoing journey of exploration, experimentation, and evolution. I encourage journaling thoughts, daily reflection, and viewing leadership as a verb—an active, ongoing process. This practice aims to boost personal fulfillment and team cohesion, fostering genuine human connections based on empathy and trust.
